Repurposing in business can be a multi-billion-dollar opportunity simply by positioning a product in one way or another. We see this often in pharmaceuticals, with the hypertension drug Viagra being the best example. Another boom we are seeing in the antidiabetic drug Ozempic is returning blockbuster profits as a weight loss drug. In small business, we have looked at samoosa offcuts used for paaper bites and surgical razors being used for a cheap and effective personal shave, while on the subject of medical, sterile surgical blades can be reused for manufacturing, arts & crafts, and other uses once they expire for medical use.

In terms of breakfast cereal thewhen we think of cereals made from byproducts, we think of something like "Cream of Wheat," made from a portion of the wheat not used in making flour. This was made from the "middlings" of the wheat, a protein-rich part of the wheat berry.

The oat crunchie cereal is made in the spirit of repurposing; it is made from the "crumbs" of oat crunchies. It is the remnants of oat crunchie manufacturing. When I say crumbs, I am actually referring to the individual pieces of the oat (sometimes called the oat kernel). Oat crunchies are packaged and marketed as perfect squares. There will also be offcuts from the edges as well as squares that broke apart when cutting. This is often resold as oat crunchie pieces if the manufacturer has a factory shop. But pieces and the resulting crumbs can also be eaten with milk as a cereal, and it is very tasty!

Now you are probably wondering: would parents give their children “high-sugar” crunchie porridge? The sugars in a lot of commercial breakfast cereals are likely to exceed this.

Sourcing

The best place to source large quantities of oat crunchie offcuts is a contract manufacturer that manufactures for many different brands and does high volumes.

Selling

Taking a cereal product to market is no joke; the shelves are dominated by large multinational brands, and the shops house brands, or "no name" brands, as we call them. You will need fancy packaging (I have decided on using a pekingese puppy) and some promotional testers. Now that there are already oatmeal balls or "cluster" cereals on the market (also known as granola or muesli), I will prefer selling them as crumbs and even converting the larger pieces to individual oat pieces (kernels) to make up the "crumbs.".

Business Model

This business buys the offcuts from the manufacturing process from oat crunchies. While you can certainly make your own, buying offcuts will allow you to source at a fraction of the cost of what it would cost you (ingredients, labour, electricity, etc.). If you cannot secure a lot, you can use the oats as a base and supplement it with nuts or corn flakes.
